A successful city respects its identity while preparing for its future.

A city is more than the buildings we construct or the roads we use. It's the neighbourhoods, parks, streets, businesses and public spaces that give a place its character and the people and businesses who make it feel like home.

Barrie is growing, and growth will change our city. That's not necessarily a bad thing. But growth shouldn't mean losing the things that make Barrie special in the first place.

For me, being proud of my community means being thoughtful about what we protect, how we grow and how we create places where people want to spend time. It means respecting the character of our neighbourhoods while recognizing that they can't and shouldn't stay frozen in time.

We can welcome change without losing our sense of place.

When we take pride in where we live, we take pride in the part we all play in making it better. – Frank Casera

A city that cares about its character.

Barrie's neighbourhoods each have their own history, character and identity. As our city grows, we need to listen to the people who live in them and respect what makes each community unique.

That means thoughtful planning, meaningful community engagement and clear expectations about how new development fits into the places around it. Growth should build on what makes our communities special and not simply add more density.

We should be asking not only “What can we build here?” but “What will make this neighbourhood better?”

Our public spaces belong to everyone.

Parks, trails, waterfronts, streets and public spaces are part of what makes Barrie a great place to live.

They give people places to gather, walk, play, connect and simply enjoy the city around them. Protecting them isn't about standing still. It's about making sure we have a realistic plan to maintain the spaces we already have while making thoughtful choices about what comes next.

The same is true of our downtown. A successful downtown should feel safe, active and welcoming. A place people want to visit, work, live and invest in. That takes local government, businesses and communities to coordinate their efforts with common goals, accountability and results.

Civic pride means knowing what is worth protecting.

The unique places, public spaces, neighbourhoods and natural features that people come to love are part of what makes Barrie special. Once they're gone, they're gone. Protecting them means making thoughtful decisions about how and where our city grows and realizing what we might lose as well as what we might gain.

At the same time, we shouldn't be afraid to build something new. Responsible economic development can create new opportunities, give people more reasons to visit Barrie and contribute to a city that continues to evolve while maintaining its sense of place.

The Barrie we build should be a city people are proud to be part of.
